Case Study:

Top Delicatessen Brand Hits Maximum Data Center Capacity

SHI, EMC and VMware deliver a storage solution to support future growth

Customer Profile

A 100+ year-old New York-based producer of high quality delicatessen products.

The customer reached maximum capacity in both of their data centers and started experiencing increased downtime.

Data Center

SHI met with EMC (customer’s preferred choice) and built upon existing technology to increase storage capacity and add VMware for automated failover between data centers.

EMC vmware

  • Increased storage capacity
  • Automated failover
  • Eliminated downtimes
  • Scalable growth

Thanks to over 100 years of constant and successful expansion, a turn-of-the-century producer of high quality delicatessen products reached maximum capacity in both of its data centers. Supporting multiple manufacturing plants, six office locations and 1,200+ end users, the family-owned deli meats company experienced increased downtime and needed additional infrastructure to meet growing storage demands.

Since EMC was a familiar technology and had previously performed well for the company, SHI met with customer IT leaders to discuss building upon the existing technology and buying programs to increase capacity (without drastically increasing costs).

After weighing multiple options, all parties signed off on an EMC storage refresh backed by VMware vCloud Suite Enterprise.

EMC’s solution included the deployment of EMC VNX 5000-series hard drive arrays in both data centers, VNXe for six remote locations and data domain devices for backing everything up.

Once the hardware was in place, VMware’s vCloud Suite Enterprise enabled the customer’s relatively small IT department to easily perform automated failover between their two data centers. It streamlined data replication from each remote warehouse and manufacturing facility back to both data centers. In addition to covering their immediate needs, the new solution’s resiliency enhanced their disaster recovery and data security posture.

During the six months the project took to complete, SHI helped deploy EMC Data Domain and an all-flash array for backup and archiving, as well as VMware Site Recovery Manager. This immediately eliminated the frequent downtimes caused by their existing aging technology and prepared them for scalable growth in the future.

SHI then worked with the customer on Phase 2 of the project – including another combination of additional EMC hardware and VMware software.
