The customer needed to refresh 3,500 devices servicing the college's entire faculty and staff, libraries and labs, but was limited by a tight budget, restrained timeline and a reduced IT staff.



SHI rolled out (424) Dell Wyse 5040 Thin Clients with monitors, and (30) Latitude 6540s, all within a constricted timeframe, thus avoiding operational disruptions and meeting the customer's internal deadlines.

Aging end-user devices at a New Jersey community college were causing the school to struggle to live up to its own technology standards. With over 3,500 devices servicing the college's faculty, staff, libraries and labs, this institute for higher learning knew it was time for a refresh. Faced with a tight budget and short deadlines, administration knew that enlisting the help of a proven partner was a solid course of action.


Already standardized on Dell technology and familiar with SHI's deployment capabilities, the college asked SHI for assistance in managing a multi-phase rollout of new Dell equipment. Each phase would roll out 800 new devices and be completed within three years. Better yet, SHI's project management would allow the school's IT staff to stay focused on more strategic initiatives.

With upfront knowledge of quantities and timelines, SHI and Dell were able to offer a discount of over $100 per device, saving the customer upwards of $50,000 in purchasing costs on their initial (400+) Dell Wyse 5040 Thin Clients with monitors and (30) Latitude 6540s.

The first phase of the rollout took place over the summer months, allowing the college to meet their internal deadline and avoid operational disruptions at the start of a new school year. In the next refresh phase, the customer utilized SHI's Integration Center for warehousing and support services.

With SHI and Dell experts available throughout the process, the customer received insight on all of their questions and guidance on additional configurations performed by their own IT team.

SHI then worked with the college on several projects including an analysis of their end-point security, video surveillance and an asset disposal buyback to reclaim the devices displaced by the refresh.
